What is Lactation Massage?

Lactation Massage is a form of breast massage, which is specifically designed to help prevent and address breast pain and discomfort related to pregnancy and lactation. This form of breast massage is commonly practiced in Japan and in some other Asian countries by medical professionals including midwives and is well-accepted in the medical community. This safe and gentle hands-on treatment is beneficial for all pregnant and lactating individuals. Lactation Massage treatment is provided based on an in-depth history of pregnancy, birth, and lactation, as well as on the assessment of breasts and posture. Treatment can include but is not limited to structural balancing, direct hands-on breast care, exercise and self-care instructions.


When to consider Lactation Massage

Lactation massage is of benefit for everyone who is, or is going to be lactating.

During pregnancy, preparing the breasts and learning lactating breast-specific exercises will greatly help kick-start the upcoming lactation journey. All pregnant women are welcome and at least one session after 36 weeks of pregnancy is highly recommended, especially for those women with:

  • Tender breasts
  • Previous breastfeeding difficulties
  • Flat or inverted nipples
  • Respiratory and/or shoulder dysfunction
  • Chest or breast surgery
  • Scoliosis

Once a baby is born and the breasts are fully functional, unfortunately all too commonly, many new mothers will experience a variety of challenges with breastfeeding, breast discomfort and pain. During this time, lactation massage can help with:

  • Smooth milk flow
  • Breast and nipple pain
  • Engorgement
  • Mastitis
  • Lumps and blebs
  • Nipple pain, Raynauds (vasospasm)
  • Body aches including neck, shoulder, chest, and arm pain
